6 Tips for Great Office Coffee-2

Does this situation sound familiar?

06.30 AM. The mindnumbing sound of your alarm clock. You respond by taking that special bag of Yirgacheffe you just bought at the Specialty Roaster, and pour yourself a cup. Life is peachy.

09.00 AM You have barely survived the daily madness of endless traffic jams or overcrowded subway rides. Office life welcomes you. The coffee, less so.

Have no fear: you are not powerless in the face of bad office coffee! Here are a few tips to optimize your office coffee.

Porcelain

We sell (bio-degradable) paper cups ourselves, but everyone knows that nothing beats good old porcelain. No burnt fingers, and nothing but the taste of coffee in your mouth and nose. So – first thing – get yourself a porcelain cup, mug, whatever. Make it distinguished, make it goofy, but above all, make it porcelain!

Keep it Clean – The Cup

Coffee is a brittle product. It absorbs anything in its immediate surroundings – and returns the favor in the aroma of your coffee.  Keep your cup squeaky clean. There’s no honor in keeping the dried-up remains of your past five coffees in that “super-dad” mug of yours.

Keep it Clean – The Machine

Press your superiors – or yourself – to clean the coffee machine as regularly as humanly possible. Oils (Coffee beans contain oil) and residues of previous brews tend to clog  your machine after a while. Again, coffee is brittle. No mather how fancy the beans you bought, it’s not worth it if your coffee has to pass through sewer-like conditions.

Keep you cup clean and hot!

Hot Stuff

No sense in pouring yourself a cold cup of coffee . Rinse your cup (keeps it clean too) with some hot water before pouring your coffee. It’ll make all the difference!

Out with the Lungo

There’s a reason baristas run screaming every time someone orders a lungo in a coffee shop. The Italians knew, and we Belgians still have a hard time getting it: a lungo is an abused espresso. If you want quality in a big(ger) cup, try pourover coffee or add some hot – not boiling –  water to your espresso.

Stir it up

Coffee is all about extraction.  This means that the coffee in your cup is “layered.” The best bit rests at the bottom; stirring makes for an even brew and and a better tasting cup.
